We kicked off 2016 with a bang this week by learning about self defence from Patrice at Urban Fit and Fearless.
Patrice taught us that with the right techniques, we can avoid confrontation and protect ourselves. I was amazed at how simple yet effective the moves are – for example, did you know that by clapping your hands over an opponent’s ears you could burst their ear drums, giving you time to poke them in the eye and deliver a few swift kicks before making a run for it? Crucially the moves focussed on targeting your attacker’s weak spots, rather than using strength or brute force.
It took us a while to get used to the idea of trying to hurt other WI members but once I pictured my five foot one opponent as big, burly and trying to attack me – I found it easier to fight back.
More importantly, we learnt about how to listen to our instincts, prevent attack (walk tall and confidently) and use our bodies to put a physical barrier between ourselves and a possible attacker without aggravating the situation. While there was plenty of fun as we all tried out our moves, by the end of the session we were all confidently taking out our assailants.
All in all, this was a great way to see in the New Year – informative, active and I for one, felt a lot safer walking home. We wish all our members – and the wider Forest Hill community – a safe, happy and healthy 2016!
Looks more like a tango lesson in my case! Enjoyed it a lot, thanks again – SONJA***
